winter learning journey day 1 activity 1

New Zealand’s European pioneers were brave, rugged and independent. Before  establishing farms. They had to first clear the land a painful and sometimes dangerous job. Their isolation and exposure to the elements forced these early New Zealanders to become hardy and multi-skilled.

  1. Kia ora Kyan,

You have highlighted a really important aspect of our history in this blog post. The original settlers of New Zealand are rarely discussed but they were pretty hardy, strong and brave people, weren't they? I can't imagine how difficult it must have been to establish communities in the middle of a brand new country that had yet to be explored. I often think about the experiences of the men and women who settled my home country of Canada. They arrived to find a cold, bleak and barren country that had winter temperatures reaching as low as -40 degrees Celsius. Brrrrr! I have no idea how they managed to stay warm and find enough food to survive those freezing conditions.

Speaking of freezing, I hope that you are staying warm and dry this holiday. It sounds like we are just about to get hit by a huge winter storm. My son, Aronui, is due to fly up from Christchurch to Auckland on Friday. I'm really hoping that the storm won't affect the flights...fingers crossed!

Keep the good blogging, Kyan, and remember to always put the information that you read on the website into your own words on your blog. We are really interested in reading your own ideas and your own thoughts.

    Cheers!

    Rachel
